I love to mix the expression of mark making with the structure of the repeat. I often sketch out the bones of the design as I imagine it to allow for my painting to have a story. It is a voyage of discovery as the brush develops my imagination onto the paper. I also enjoy painting the elements of the design in sections and piecing them together with photoshop to allow for freedom of movement.
For me it is important to retain the quality of the hand drawn or hand made delicacy of mark making as much as possible. There is a spontaneity and tactile aesthetic in the spirit of the work I create.
I also do enjoy designing weaves from Jacquards to stripes and I find that this is where CAD based designing is very helpful to portray the technical intension for the looms.
I work with a variety of mixed media from paints, inks, charcoal, wax, resist work and continue to discover new ways to make a mark as I feel this can inspire designs and shapes. I find inspiration wherever I go, from nature to fashion, books and vintage fairs anywhere I take the moment to spot the details I notice the emotional connection.
Designing textiles for interiors is an absolute passion and a joy as its these spaces we want to inhabit, spaces that create an impact, spaces we can call home.
